Richard is a partner, specialising in the music and merchandising industries.

He has gained particular expertise in representing independent record companies and publishing companies, negotiating high value entertainment based merchandising deals and supervising and writing reports for due diligence as part of the sale and purchase of recording and publishing catalogues.

Richard is a partner, specialising in the music and merchandising industries.

He has gained particular expertise in representing independent record companies and publishing companies, negotiating high value entertainment based merchandising deals and supervising and writing reports for due diligence as part of the sale and purchase of recording and publishing catalogues.

Following a career as a professional musician with a major record deal, Richard studied law at university and trained at music practice Compton Carr (now part of Charles Russell). Following qualification in 1990 Richard continued at Compton Carr being made a partner in 1993 before joining Statham Gill Davies as a partner in 1997.

Richard has represented a wide range of clients over the years, including major publisher Sony Music Publishing and Universal Group’s Bravado Merchandising, as well as independents Ministry of Sound, Gee Street, Rough Trade and Edel. He represents many well-known independents such as Warp Records, World Circuit Records and One Little Indian Records (including their publishing divisions) as well as independent publishers Nettwerk One Music and Touch Tones Music, and premier independent merchandising company Global Merchandising Services. Richard was team leader and wrote the due diligence reports for Sanctuary Group’s acquisitions of Castle and Trojan, as well as Imagem’s acquisition of Boosey and Hawkes. He also assisted Netherlands TV company and publisher Talpa on its agreements for the Voice UK, the Voice of Ireland and the Voice of Australia. Richard also has a particular expertise in “short form” documents, including drafting the well-known AWAL digital aggregator agreement when representing AWAL prior to its acquisition by Kobalt. Richard has lectured widely on topics related to his practice.
